On 26 April 2002 the German upper house(Bundesrat) adopted a reform of medical studies.As of the winter semester 2003/2004 studies at the medical faculties/schools of German universities will be carried out on the basis the new Medical Practice and Licence Code(Approbationsordnung). The new regulations aim,in particular, to improve the pactical training and to promote the social skills of medical doctors.Moreover,greater consideration than has previourly been the case will be given to taking a holistic view of the patient situation as well as the having an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment process.Prevention and health promotion will be in corporated as will pain therapy (palliative therapy)
The study of dental medicine and of veterinary medicine is related to the study of human medicine.The study of human medicine is based on the Frderal Medical Code(Bundesärzteordung) and the Medical Practice and Licence Code(Approbationsordnung) for doctors.A pilot programme is being run at the Humboldt Uni Berlin and the private uni of Witten-Herdecke known as "Reformstudiengang Medizin" under which, inter alia,the fields of pre-clinical and clinical studies are no longer treated separately.
STUDY CURRICULUM: The reformed Medical Practice and Licence Code(Approbationsordnung) for doctors which comes into force in the 2003/2004 winter semester in particular contains the following elements:
Drgree courses will be adapted to take account of the new and changing requirements in medical health care.Besides teaching the scientific principles and fundamentals,the courses also treat coordinating,general medical,pharmacological-therapeutic,and healt management questions.
Teaching will interlink theoretical and clinical teaching by continually considering and combing theory and practice throughout the whole of the degree course.
Teaching will take a cross-disciplinary and case-related approach,with problem oriented and interdisciplinary teaching provided on topic-related contents which focus on the patient.
Practice-related teaching will be provided on a concrete case basis at the patient's bedside;teaching will be offered in small groups of up to a maximum of six students;block practical courses will be offered.
Greater focus on general medical training:in order to improve students' general medical and coordinational skills,the proportion of general medicine taught and examined in the degree course will be in creased significantly.In addition,it will be possible to take general medicine as an elective in the pratical year.A block practical course in general medicine will be a required element.
