Letter of Invitation for XXX to the University of XXX Joint-Training PhD program in Chemical and Environmental Engineering

1.   As Graduate Studies Chair of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering in University of XXX, it is my pleasure to invite Mr. Zou XXX (personal information: XXX, male, born on September, 21, 1982, a current graduate student in the Department of Chemistry at XXX University) as a Visiting Scholar from September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2010, working in the lab of Dr. XXXwho has a project in need of organic chemistry experience.

2.   The purpose of the Doctoral joint training program and visiting scholar is for the express purpose of being engaged in cutting edge research where organic chemistry knowledge can be applied to chemical processing and environmental problems. Mr. Zou will also be thoroughly trained in English as discussed next.

3.   The objective of this research project will be to develop and design protocols for the measurement of brominated flame retardants in environmental matrices that include wastewater, groundwater, surface water, soils, dust and biosolids. These protocols will be used subsequently to study the composition of these compounds in environments that lead directly to human exposure. Mr. Zou will be asked to write two progress reports: one at the midpoint of the stay and the other one at the end, which will be in the form of manuscripts to be sent for publication in scientific journals.

4.         During Mr. Zou’s time in the joint program, his competency in the English language would be assessed through a Speak-test given to all foreign students. Mr. Zou would also be trained to write technical papers in English by his research advisor, would be required to be a teaching assistant for two semesters and be evaluated by the students and major teaching faculty for his verbal abilities.

5.         As a visiting scholar, Mr. Zou would not need to pay tuition here. It is our understanding that Mr. Zou will visit under the “Chinese Top University Graduate Students Studying Abroad” program, which will be responsible for all of his expenses including travel and all personal and living expenses. We will provide laboratory space and supplies to support his work. The work to be done here will be important part of his dissertation.

6.         Since he has passed China's College English Test Band Six, we understand that he has necessary English skills to successfully complete this joint Ph.D. training program. In addition, we have found out that Mr. XXX is a highly motivated individual through the contact by emails in the past months. It is very impressive that he has good written English.
7.   Because the purpose of the CSC program is to send the brightest Chinese students who are studying at the best academic institutions in China to go abroad to high level universities in developed countries and to work under the guidance of the top experts in their fields, Dr. XXX has agreed to be the research advisor. Mr. Zou will join a very diverse research program with excellent facilities and instrumentation and a rich environment with seminars, laboratory projects meetings, and opportunities to interact with a large number of faculty and research scientists.
8.   This offer is contingent on the appropriate approval by our Department of Human Resources and his obtaining the appropriate visa status. I hope this will assist him in arranging his plans to join us.
9.   If you have any questions, please contact me at XXX
