The Berlin University of the Arts
The Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin) was established by law in 1975. Basically it consists of two institutions with long traditions: the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, dating back to the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1696, and the Hochschule für Musik, established in 1869.
Today the University encompasses practically all disciplines of the arts including fine arts, visual arts, design, architecture, music and the performing arts plus teachers' education for all school levels in fine arts and music. The School is unique in Germany in its broad disciplinary scope and in its character as a university-type wissenschaftliche und künstlerische Hochschule. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees in art theory and art history, in musicology, architecture and education.
As of 2003, the UdK has 4100 students, thereof almost 20% international students. It is organized in five Schools or Colleges (Fakultäten): Fine Arts (Bildende Kunst), Design and Architecture (Gestaltung), Music (Musik), Performing Arts (Darstellende Kunst) and Education and Social Sciences (Erziehungs- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften).
Libraries, workshops and other facilities including studios and practice rooms are open throughout the year.
The most important reference book at the UdK is the program catalog (Vorlesungsverzeichnis) which is published a few weeks before the beginning of each semester. It contains all relevant addresses, the names of all teachers and the titles and times of most classes.
The Office of International Relations is responsible for organizing the Schools' international cooperation activities which include the exchange of students and teachers and joint projects. Persons from abroad studying or wishing to study at the UdK on an individual basis are assisted by the Office of International Student Services (Akademisches Auslandsamt). |
