A German MIT: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology founded

The University of Karlsruhe (Technical University) and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe have founded the “Karlsruhe Institute of Technology”, where they will focus on research in micro- and nanotechnologies, scientific computing and materials research for the energy sector.

Enter the lab for nanostructures at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and you will find a high resolution electron microscope. Amongst other things, scientists can use it to dissect cancer cells and examine defect microchips. It was this kind of cutting edge research that enabled the University of Karlsruhe (TH) to win funding in the state-sponsored excellence initiative last year, meaning it became one of Germany’s first three “elite universities” and will receive 96 million euros in additional funding over the next five years.

And now the University of Karlsruhe wants to use this momentum to establish themselves as a leading institute on the world stage. To achieve this aim, they have founded KIT – a unique and cutting edge model in Germany. “The KIT is the biggest experiment in the German educational and research landscape,” chairman of the board Eberhard Umbach told Financial Times Deutschland.

KIT will have a staff of around 8000 with an annual budget of 600 million euros. This may seem small in comparison to the famous MIT in the US – which has an annual budget of 1.6 billion euros – however these figures mean that the KIT achieves parity with the ETH Zürich, the leading technical university in Europe.

The KIT has attracted a lot of attention and countless companies, such as BOSCH and SAP, have queued up to sign the six million euro industry cooperation agreements. Currently KIT is working on its founding treaty, which is to be signed at the end of the year.

呵呵,风水轮流转啊,100年前很Komisch的是karlsruhe(TH)还确实是MIT的Vorbild,像当年普林斯顿也是自诩为美国的歌廷根啊！
