International Master Programme in Electrical Engineering
1. General Information
This programme offers to acquire a Master's degree primarily to applicants having an excellent Bachelor degree certificate (BSc, UK: "with honours"). The programme is open to foreign and German students.
The degree "Master of Science in Electrical Engineering" is equivalent to the German "Diplom-Ingenieur in Elektrotechnik". This means that the same topics (courses) have to be taken.
A student may specialize in one of the following areas:
Automation and Control
Communications and Information Technology
Electrical Power Engineering
Mechatronics
Microelectronics
Precision and Micro Engineering
As applicants come from different countries, different universities, offering different specialization areas, there will be an individual study plan for each student.
Each master student is associated to a lecturer (his mentor), who will be his contact person during the entire study.
Especially in the first semesters each student is also advised by a tutor, who assists in personal, linguistic and technical matters.
In an optional preparatory semester the students may improve their German language proficiency and acquire technical prerequisites for study which are still lacking.
2. Admission Requirements
Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, Computer Science, or eventually Physics (BSc) with excellent results (significantly above average)
Minimum duration of Bachelor study: 4 years
Final project of at least 3 months duration
Solid knowledge of German (certificate required, e.g. DSH examination or DaF-test level 3). depending on the language ability in German the preparatory course in German may be waived.
A good command of English, TOEFL Computer Test >230 credit points or an equivalent certificate
Applicants with other graduations are thoroughly checked concerning their knowledge of basic theory, e.g. BTech, BEng, other foreign engineering grades, German Fachhochschule diploma, ...
3. Structure of the Master Course
The Master's degree is achieved in four semesters, which are scheduled as follows:
Preparatory semester
(optional)
1st semester
2nd semester
3rd semester
4th semester if necessary, for adaptation to the basic courses
and for improving the language proficiency
individual course programme
individual course programme
individual course programme
6 months master project with written thesis
(diploma thesis), oral presentation and discussion
Students may begin in the winter semester (mid October, deadline for application: 1. May), or in the summer semester (April, deadline for application: 1. November). Starting in the winter semester is recommended.
4. Industry Practical (Internship)
An industry practical training of at least 12 weeks must be done. An appropriate activity, e.g. an employment prior to studies may be taken into account. Students are assisted in finding a suitable internship.
5. Individual Programme (see Appendi
An individual programme is intended to make it possible for each student to optimally use his/her specialized knowledge acquired his/her undergraduate study. At the beginning of the individual course programme, at the latest, each student decides on a specialization area. Compulsory subjects and optional subjects are chosen from the main studies catalogue of the respective specialization area.
Moving to another specialization area should be avoided. If for plausible reasons a change is desired, it has to be made after the 1st semester, at the latest.
In the 3 semesters with lectures, students must take overall:
a minimum of 60 weekly hours per semester (SWS) and take 8 examinations with marks,
of which there must be about 35 SWS and 4-5 examinations with marks out of the compulsory subjects.
The other courses may be chosen from the catalogue of optional subjects. All subjects not completed with a subject examination (F, "Fachabschlussnote") must be completed with a proof of academic achievement (L, "Leistungsnachweis").
There are different rules for the specialization area mechatronics, see
More Information on Mechatronics (in English) or More Information on Mechatronics (in German).
6. Final Project and Examination
Prerequisites for admission to the final project
all subject examinations of the individual course programme passed
all the proofs of academic achievement of the individual course programme passed
has furnished evidence of industry practical
The candidate has to apply in writing to the examining board for admission to the final project.
The preparation, acceptance, assessment of the Master/Diploma thesis as well as assessment and passing of the examination must be in accordance with the guidelines of the Diploma examination regulations of the department.
7. University Record and Master Certificate (Diploma Certificate)
The study is completed with the final project followed by the Diploma examination. After successfully having passed the Diploma examination the academic degree "Diplomingenieur" (abbr. "Dipl.-Ing.") in the course of studies Electrical Engineering is conferred.
An English translation of the Diplom certificate with the designation "Master of Science in Electrical Engineering" (abbr. "M.Sc.E.E.) is issued to the student. In the certificate and its translation it is noted that the academic degree has been acquired within the international master programme.
The certificate issued by TU Dresden states the subjects completed at TU Dresden (8 marks plus proofs of academic achievement).
8. Guidance and Supervision
Upon arrival at TU Dresden each student is assigned to a mentor and to a tutor. The mentor is a person of the department's scientific staff (full professor, lecturer). The tutor is a graduate student. It is expected that each student learns the German language towards the DSH examination level. For that, in the preparatory semester for students only having a basic knowledge of German an intensive course (300 hrs., not free of costs) is offered. In the subject-related semesters an accompanying German course (4... 6 weekly hrs. / sem.) is offered at least in the first semester.
The Student Council of the department offers assistance in all questions of student life.
9. Related Rules
In case of open questions there hold the examination regulations for the department of of Electrical Engineering and Communications:
Examinations and examination deadlines
Examination board
Examinators and observers
Written, oral examinations, proofs of academic achievement
Assessment of examination performances
Crediting of periods of study, of performances proved during studies and examinations
Repetition of examinations
Withdrawal, default, deceit, infringement of the regulations
10. Living in Dresden
There is no tuition fee, except a semester fee of approx. 100 Eur. This fee includes free public transport (city and surroundings). Foreign students will find a place in one of the students' dormitories of the university. The cost of living including the dormitory is approx. 500 Eur per month (1 Eur = 1 USD, as of December 2002).
